Bear Creek Group was awarded the 8.5 million dollar development contract in late fall of 2014. It started with site clearing and grubbing. After completion of clearing activities, the earthworks of 260,000 m3 was moved to contour the site as seen today. Shortly after work continued with on-site servicing. Water, sewer, and stormwater management systems were installed. The three final phases of the development have started. The requirement to upgrade HWY 37 to accommodate the increase in traffic volume is now well underway with completion by late October. The second last phase of work is the off-site sanitary sewer and pipeline work to tie in the District of Kitimat trunk sewer main on Lahakas Avenue at the Strawberry Meadows development. The third and final phase was to service the site with hydro, a substantial undertaking currently under design.

Our sister company Spring Creek Aggregates in partnership with a local aggregate supplier has manufactured an estimated $750,000 in specialized aggregates for the project. Local industry sub-contractors and suppliers have also benefited from the project to the tune of $1.2 million to date in one form or another. Bear Creek has also employed a local workforce (Kitimat and Terrace) and has accounted for $1 million in wages.

Environmental challenges such as bird nesting and fish-bearing creeks were a large concern while developing the site. Also, the Ministry of Highways set a development standard that no increased volume of water was to leave the site that was there before the development, this was a costly engineering and construction challenge.

Maintaining traffic safety throughout the worksite is a high priority, this task performed by Pacific Traffic Control of Prince Rupert. A task that has been challenging with keeping construction machinery and work continuity as productive as possible, and traffic as safe as possible.

Bear Creek Group continues to maintain a great safety record, and this project is another showcase of the high standards we place on ourselves.
